To provide equal education opportunities to all, the State Government of Rajasthan has taken the initiative to start Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalaya at 76 blocks in Rajasthan. Seeing parents spending lakhs of rupees to get their children enrolled in private schools, the State Government of Rajasthan initiated the step with less fee burden as compared to any English medium private school. Out of 167 such blocks in the state where Swami Vivekananda Model Schools are not there, 76 English-medium Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalayas will be opened, School Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasara informed.

In the year 2019, to celebrate the 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary Directorate of Education, Bikaner issued orders to open an English medium school in Rajasthan’s every district headquarters called as Mahatma Gandhi Government School. Such first school was opened in Pink City Jaipur’s Mansarover area.

Government-run Swami Vivekananda model schools are affiliated to the CBSE syllabus in English-medium while Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalayas are also taught in English-medium but affiliated to the state board syllabus.

The School Education Minister said orders will also be issued for the opening of more Mahatma Gandhi Vidyalayas in the remaining blocks in the state. So far, a total of 33 such schools in various district headquarters have been started.

Without any new construction, the state government has converted functioning or operational government schools in such English-medium schools. Ram Chandra Pilania, District Education officer, Jaipur said, “We have chosen a school that has less enrolment so that more students of that school will not get affected due to the change in the process.” According to the guidelines, any government school that has its building with facilities like furniture, classrooms, toilets, and teachers appointed. These English-medium schools are from class 1st to 12th.
